Hey Girls,
What do you see when you flip on the TV or turn the page of a magazine? Advertisements. Adds have became so overpowering in America that it has a negative effect of many viewers. Sometimes subconciously. And more times than not it has a effect on young girls.
Lets be honest here, I admit to having seen Eva Longoria on the Pantene commercials and bought the shampoo because I for some reason thought I would get her amazing hair. But I can't...and Eva probably could not either without the help of her professional hair stylist. Thats the problem. Most people do not connect the two. And fortunantly enough for me I realized how ridiculous I was for buying the product for a unrealistic reason.
Thats what I am writing about today. You see beautiful men and women on Budweiser commercials, when typically the people who really drink it don't look like they just stepped off the pages of Vogue. Not that I have anything against people drinking, but if you are a mature adult that is one thing...if you are a 12 year old girl it glamourizes the not always glamorous.
On another note, In just about every clothing commercial the women are bone thin...literally. And when only a very small percentage of women are supposed to be tall and very thin due to body frame and stature it is hard to try to look that way. (especially when you are 5'4 with hips and a butt) Thank goodness I have gotten over my "I hate my body" stage back when I was in high school and now accept myself for who I am. I am not saying I do not have the occasional "there is nothing in my closet ..everything looks bad!" day but who doesn't? :) Thats just a girl thing.
What I am trying to say is that in order to ever be fully happy with yourself, you have to accept yourself. You can always stay fit to a helthy level and it is certainly a good idea to make wise decisions when snacking, but God made you the way for are for a reason. I am short and curvy...and I am not going to wake up one day and be tall and slender and I am completely okay with that. Because when your are confident it shows. And confidence mixed with humility is the perfect accessory.
As young women, we have to stop compairing ourselves to who we see in TV or Magazines. We have to start understanding that everyone is different and make good judgements towards what products we buy and for what reason we buy them. No one is perfect, and even the women in the adds have been airburshed and touched up multiple times to look that flawless. It shouldn't take people countless hours, computer editing and a professional make-up artist in order to get the "natural" look. Am I the only one who that confuses?!
I am so thankful for Seventeen Magazine and their Body Peace pledge. You can sign your name on the website and pledge to stop being overly critical towards yourself and start loving the things that make you an individual. I am also grateful for the amazing efforts Dove is doing to promote natual beauty! I just love their "real women" commercials!
Anyways, my point is that most of the media is brain-washing women into thinking they ought to look a certain way. However, when you look at some of the most famous Holly Wood Stars they are recognized for their individuality. Such as : Cindy Crawford-beauty mark. Kim Kardashian-super curves. Julia Roberts -huge smile. Sarah Jessica Parker-completely unique style sense. ..I could go on and on. The thing about these women is that they have taken what were given and feature it amazingly. That is what we should do...not try to be like them...but take what we have and be proud! Instead of hiding your curves flaunt them, instead of covering up your freckles, highlight them....love the way you look.
(Now, I am not an idiot and I know that everyone has their bad days but atleast try to be more positive!)
Please dont say "Well in your older post you talk about up and comming trends! How is that being an individual?" . I love style, trend watching and making them unique to me...that is who I am. It is something that makes me ...well me. In my mind there are some things I see people wear that I find ridiculous, but I don't have to wear it so I am certainly not going to say anything to them about it. Because for all I know, they could hate pearls and my favorite shade of blue! I can however guide you away from looking like "Great Aunt Lola"...but then again everyone loves her! Why? ......Because she is unique ;)
Untill Tomorrow,
Tori
